Is competition ever friendly?

I am really bad at the politics of competition. I will walk into an arena of competing associates and really believe they are willing to help and lend a hand in that great new “web 2.0″ way of sharing the love. But no.

No it isn’t so. The latest was me being bloody naive when I thought of marketing two different products and tweeting about it. Talk about cold shoulders from a large group of people.

I work with both products Ubertor and myRealPage. Both companies offer hosted websites for Realtors. As a designer and marketing person, I don’t see why I would limit my clients to one. Dumb of me to think everyone would understand.

In fact, there are more people rutted into their brand than my Grandpa was with his Ford. Once a Ford man always a ford man. People like this are your best marketers because they over compensate the products actual abilities as well as slander (without any legal liable) the competitors. Gramps hated anything import and was quite verbal about it. Case in point is this video “Ubertor vs myRealPage” from a Realtor making false statements. But wow, what a marketing plug for those who are unaware. A real user slamming the competition, (Interesting to note he’s selling Ubertor signups from his site, so I’m not too sure which it is, real user of selling agent)

Uberto or myRealPage, I have used both system for many years watching them change and grow. whether you choose Ubertor or myRealPage, each one is different and each has strengths and weaknesses. I want to offer as many marketing products as possible that I can help businesses brand and use. Cold shoulders can blindly follow like the old days. In the 2.0 version of open communication, perhaps there is a market out there for people who want a real choice, I’m hoping so.

“Domain Registry of Canada” Scam

The Domain Registry of Canada is pulling a mail-out scam.
Has anyone else received one of these? They mail a notice of renewal for your domain name with pricing, check boxes and a credit card information area for them to renew your domain name.

It’s been my experience that the average person has little understanding of who their domain registrar actually is and how it all works and I am guessing that this is what The DRoC people are hoping for.
As a domain name registrar reseller myself receiving this notice stood out to me like a red flag. They are using the word “renewal” as if this is coming from YOUR current domain registrar but what they are really trying to do is TRANSFER your domain name to their services.

Normally, a succesful transfer relies on the person clicking “yes” in a confirmation email from the current registrar but what the fine print on the back of these DRoC mail-outs say is that in the event a transfer doesn’t take place they will keep trying daily until it becomes available for transfer. Not only that but “You agree to pay prior to the effectiveness of the desired services.” In otherwards, if your transfer to them fails, you still pay.
I don’t know of any domain registrar who does that except for DRoC.

Let's discuss Body Modification

Andrew Niland was arrested for performing body modification on various individuals who had asked him to do so. But I'm not sure what to say about that yet because...

First I have to ask myself, what is body mod? I can't list all here but generally when one hears the term body mod, one might think of branding, scarification, piercing and even tattoos as just a sampling of what body mod is. I tend to think of everything we do to intentionally change our natural selves is a form of body modification even if the change can be created naturally. If it's a choice then it's body mod in my humble opinion.

Every morning when I shave I am altering my natural appearance so believe it or not, it's body modification in my eyes. When a nurse in Surrey Memorial recently shaved off a man's beard as he lay in a coma, she would probably have been better off piercing both his ears in the eyes of his family. I believe it's still in court. Weight alteration from getting skinny to bulking and building up muscle is body modification. Definitely plastic surgery is a form of body modification.

Being OK with the choices each individual makes seems to depend on what group a person associates with. For example, a high fashion breast augmentation and eye lift person probably would never associate with the scarification and 5 brow piercings person. Not only that, they would probably sneer at one another when passing on the street for each other's "Stupidity". In their own circles they discuss freely the practitioners/doctors (depending on group) they use to one another. I know, I am in both groups.

All I know is Body Modification is ancient and is here to stay. However, If you remove your own fingers don't look for disability handouts later in life.

I have had the opportunity to read some points of view on the subject and got an invite on Facebook to help support this Niland fellow. I don't know enough about the industry to know whether he had the right amount of certification or what not. Or if the industry even has certification set up for it. It should, we need it to inspect a house and drive a car.

How do you teach a kid restraint?

In the book Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Charlie bucket saved a piece of chocolate. With great discipline and restraint he only savoured a tiny piece of it every day. I was in grade 3 when I read that and realize today just how much effect it had on me over my life so far. As far back as I can remember, I looked up to this. I'm sure this is where I learned to eat the vegetables on my plate first and save the chop for last.

Brandon is the complete opposite. He eat his most favorite part of the meal first leaving the worst part for last. He wears his favorite cloths to school everyday in a row until they need to go into the laundry so by Wednesday, as far as he's concerned, he has nothing to wear. That's fine. But he complains about the position he finds himself in blaming others for his predicament. "you haven't done laundry for too long", "you feed me too many vegetables"

Maybe it's just a matter of teaching him to accept the position he got himself into. That way he can make up his own mind to use restrain. After all, I don't want teach hording.

I am fortunate to be working with some of the best in the business and that some of the best in the business see me as the *Ka-Ching!* and keep up their marketing plans and value the branding consistency.

This is a bad week for Virus / Worms /rogues etc. If you or any of your family use Facebook or MSN Messenger please read the following, it might save you from some grief and save some money.

MSNWorm.FU is a worm that spreads through MSN Messenger. To do so, it opens conversations with the infected user’s contacts and offers them a file as if it were a photo for the contact to accept and consequently become infected. The file is sent together with sentences such as:

“me puedes marcar en esta foto de facebook?” (can you tag me in this facebook photo) “me cerraron mi cuenta por subir esta foto. si esta muy mal?” (they closed my account for loading this photo. Is it that bad?) “viste esta super fiesta de año nuevo?” (check out the New Year party) “toma, esta perfecta esta foto como wallpaper” (here, this photo is perfect as wallpaper)

The file is usually compressed in a .zip file to avoid being detected by the Messenger.

DirDel.A is a worm that reaches computers with a folder icon, to fool users into running it. When run, it does not display any message or open any folder. This malware replaces folders in different directories with a copy of itself. For example, if there is a folder called Example, it creates a copy of itself in the same directory called Example.exe and deletes all the original folders and their content.

This worm spreads by copying itself to all the system drives and shared folders.

P2PShared.AB reaches computers disguised as an email file, with names related to trademarks, such as Ikea.exe. To spread, it copies itself onto the shared files of P2P programs, with names of programs, disks, and so on. For example:

Youtube Music Downloader 1.0.exe

Absolute Video Converter 6.2.exe

FOOTBALL MANAGER 2009.exe

Password Cracker.exe

This worm also spreads via email by sending spam emails with subjects such as You´ve received a Hallmark E-Card, and an attached file called postcard.zip which contains malware. See image here

In addition, this week PandaLabs has informed about a new phishing attack used by Facebook as bait. French users received a message inviting them to view specific content in Facebook. When they did, they were redirected to a fake Facebook page, similar to the original. Any details they entered were sent to cyber-crooks.

I do single property websites using Wordpress. They are easy to manage and have many advantages all of which won’t be covered here. If you’re interested in doing this please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information.

Before you start ask yourself why. For some the answer is to offer something more to your client. It can make a client feel like a million bucks and can cost as little as $10 if you’re a DYI type. For others it’s about driving more traffic to the listing causing it to reach higher in search engines which in turn drives traffic to your own regular website. Of course you can have both but one is obviously harder to achieve than the other.

If you’re looking to have great search engine optimization [SEO] then don’t use the property address for the URL. Use a broader term. This way you can use the URL (and site for that matter) over again for a new listing down the road taking advantage of something called residual search traffic. The total numbers of clicks to your site matters. Also, expect it to not look as graphically pleasing as a brochure site that does not drive traffic. The use of Flash galleries and converting text to images so you can use a specific font type is completely the wrong way to go for a SEO site.

It’s still possible to please your client with thier address as a URL like 125LoveleyStreet.com since you can have more than one URL pointed to the the same website. Maybe advertise this one on the sign outfront since the address and the online information should go hand in hand. Don’t market the hell out of this address URL though. You may end up watering down the clicks to the single property website that you want to use continually.

Obviously you will have a link back to your regular site because active external links pointing to your site (among other things) is a great way to push traffic and search engine stats. How many realtors have external links pointing to their site? In the menu bar of your Single Property Website will be the usual “About” and “Contact” links both of which can carry the prospective client back to your real website.

It’s not as hard to put together as one might think. In fact there are a lot of ready made Wordpress Themes specificly designed for this exact use. The Single Property Website is something more you can add to your arsenal of marketing systems offered a prospective listing. I will provide a single page brandable write-up on the subject for use in your Property Evaluation to give to your client.

However, November also saw a corresponding decrease in the number of new homes coming onto the market.

In its most recent statistics release, the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) reports that residential property sales in Greater Vancouver declined 69.7 per cent in November 2008 to 874 from the 2,883 sales recorded in November 2007.

Residential benchmark prices, as calculated by the MLSLink Housing Price Index®, declined 12.8 per cent between May and November 2008, amounting to an 8.3 per cent year-to-date price reduction for detached, attached and apartment properties in Greater Vancouver between November 2007 and 2008. In May 2008, the overall residential benchmark price was $568,411, compared to $495,704 in November 2008.

“Times of turmoil, from which we always emerge, offer excellent opportunities to buy quality real estate,” says REBGV president, Dave Watt. “For those whose personal finances allow them to get involved, there are opportunities in today’s housing market that have not been seen in many years.

“The local real estate market is not immune to the current economic challenges globally; however, Canada’s disciplined lending structure has kept the mortgage landscape steady in these uncertain times.”

New listings for detached, attached and apartment properties declined 10.8 per cent to 3,012 in November 2008 compared to November 2007, when 3,377 new units were listed. Active listings in November declined 4.7 percent to 18,348 from the 19,257 active listings in Greater Vancouver in October 2008.

Sales of detached properties in November 2008 declined 69.8 per cent to 322 from the 1,067 units sold during the same period in 2007. The benchmark price for detached properties declined 8.6 per cent from November 2007 to $666,525. Since May 2008, the benchmark price for a detached property in Greater Vancouver has declined 13.6 per cent.

Sales of apartment properties declined 67.9 per cent last month to 410 compared to 1,276 sales in November 2007. The benchmark price of an apartment property declined 8.6 per cent from November 2007 to $342,315. Since May 2008, the benchmark price for an apartment property in Greater Vancouver has declined 12.2 per cent.

Attached property sales in November 2008 decreased 73.7 per cent to 142, compared with the 540 sales in November 2007. The benchmark price of an attached unit declined 6.4 per cent between November 2007 and 2008 to $426,287. Since May 2008, the benchmark price for an attached property in Greater Vancouver has declined 11 per cent. Click here to see the Graph

I have to hand it to Danielle on this one. I haven’t had much to do with trying to get Brandon to clean his room. It’s mostly been Danielle. I’m willing to bet that my carrying on and criticism about the constant mess was more detrimental to getting it clean than anything. Let’s just say everyone knew what I thought about it but nothing ever changed.

A few weeks ago Danielle said she had been doing some reading about how to get kids to keep their room clean. Not just clean it, but keep it clean. I was interested enough to remember the conversation but didn’t get involved because we divide parental time up and she seemed to know there was a better way on this one.

Well, it has been working! And tonight was over the top! He went through his toys and put some aside he doesn’t want anymore, re-organized all the others including his cloths, books, electronic games and on we go. All with no intervention from us at all. He never asked for help or had some treat coming at the end - in fact it was the hour before bed time tonight. His room is cleaner than any place in our house all because he knows how and went ahead and did it.

What a kid.

My First Real Estate Prediction

I have to get this out now because the Major Domo Real Estate Guru and owner of a real estate office I work at will be soon flying in from Santiago for Christmas. He was the one who told us last year to sell our houses by May of this year. At the time no one would have believed it except that it came from his mouth and this office knows to believe his words. Most Agents without this type of information are still standing around wondering what the hell happened.

I want to get this out before I hear what he says. If his predictions are the same as mine then it might look like I’ve just written his words. This post being dated before his arrival will prove these are my own words. What I write here is based on my own research and experience. This is my first real prediction on the local real estate market in Vancouver. That was a great big caveat. Don’t base your decisions on this please.

Now that I’ve written all that I don’t know how to start.

“I predict bla…” “Real estate in Vancouver will bla…”

“blab la bla”

Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin.

Against what most seem to say, I believe the local real estate market will continue to tank in Vancouver for the next few years. I have no idea why most believe this is going to be over by spring of 2009 because it won’t, (by my estimations). There are many reasons why I see this as a long term state of affairs and I promise to only touch on a few. Most of you are already bored and haven’t even got this far. At least you can tell I’m interested. And that’s really the point anyway. It’s all about me - learning to feel OK going against the grain.

Prices are still too high. Even though prices have dropped we are still over valued in most cases. It’s quite easy to sell a place in this market. Price it below where the market is heading, not where the market is right now. Most sellers don’t do this. Many sellers can’t price reasonably because they have purchased at too high a price a few years earlier. What happens instead is they choose a price based on what sold last week and then every month or so they adjust the price down following the market down like water in a toilet bowl.

There are no first time buyers. Most Real Estate transactions in the last few years were by property owners and a lot of those were investors. Even now that prices have dropped mortgage restrictions have taken many of the would be first time buyers right out of the game. Even those who became first time buyers a year ago may have a hard time finding a new mortgage due to new regulations if they decided to move today.

There are no investors. I’m already getting tired of the term “global crises”. On the world level, Canada is doing just a little to well. Investors find the US to be full of a lot more bargains than here. Places like Miami for instance are as low as -50% their regular going prices.

So if you had listened to my guru friend last year and sold right before the drop, you would have a couple hundred thousand buckeroos in your pocket right now. And had you taken that nice nest egg and purchased in Miami when the Canadian Dollar was near par with the US Dollar and waited the few years I believe it’s going to take… Let’s just say there is money to be made in Real Estate and it’s not too late.

I think it’s still a great time to get out and get liquid because my thinking is the worst is yet to come.

The" Adult" Antsocial Social Network 2.0 and Fetlife

It took me 2 years to jump on the Facebook bandwagon and it's primarily because I distrust sites that allow anyone to comment. There are some twisted people out there. I should know I'm one of them. Then I saw how Facebook began implementing built in security features I can control.

Livejournal worked for me in a similar way because of the community and levels of visibility I could have within those friendships offering a feeling of security. Although, I have been known to post public when it was for my eyes only *oops*.

On public forums, especially adult forums, the content is sometimes fodder for search engines and the privacy levels are about the same as the cleanliness of a pit-hole toilet at a 72 hour beer garden. Suddenly Alt.com comes to mind. Mostly the only security anyone has on the Alt.com site is their handle. (Mom, Dad; A handle is the nickname people use to hide behind to keep the creepy ones away). The handle is security YOU create and each one has to be unique. Kind of like bringing your own toilet seat liner to that earlier mentioned pit-hole toilet. I have never used my handle as security on a site like Alt.com but I am always annoyed when I get outed with my real name anyway. So I don't play with that site, (but things may have changed since then).

Fetlife is new. Fetlife looks promising. Fetlife looks like Facebook, only black! (oooooh). But Fetlife is shite, (Shite is shit in Scottish). OK, I might not know what I'm talking about because I have never signed up to Fetlite, oops I mean Fetlife, but my best friend just got outed by an ass-hat of a person who should know better. A self-proclaimed sex educator who knows the ins and outs of adult forum etiquette, they are either absolutely stupid or it was an intentional move. I'm going to compliment them and say it was intentional. It all falls down at the handle.

Ah Facebook. Where real names are used in a real way and any ass-hatishness can be zipped up or simply blocked. I use the "block", I have limited only a few to see my groups and I never friend someone without putting them on a list that I have created all with their own limitations. Maybe one of these "adult" social networks will create an application to connect with facebook and its security. For now, I am going to pass on Fetwear, oops I mean Fetlife.

Anyone live in the area?

Quite a change from running on batteries and propane for 4 days at Meager Creek. In Fort Langley, the trailer becomes a cabin plugged into the grid.

You’ve had a client that thought they knew more about design than you.

Your clients pay you for your professional expertise and skill, yet you’ve run into one of ‘those’ clients, that refuses to take the advice from the very person he/she is paying for advice (you).

You’ve had a client that insisted on using the font “Papyrus,” and you had to hold in your barf as you prepped it [the design] for printing.

You’ve requested a vector logo from a client, and instead, they email you a 72 dpi image they grabbed from a website.

You’ve used typography as a texture.

You don’t have a favorite font because you love “Typography.” Not Fonts. Choosing a favorite font would be like choosing a favorite child, it’s just wrong.

You collect as many free stuffs from the interwebs as you can on your hard drive, hoping that one day, that cool project will come along that you can actually use some cool shit on.

You’d rather have a free font than a free gallon of gas.

It’s hard to talk about frustrations at your job with a group of friends because they have no idea what “Vector” or “DPI” is, just to name a couple.

You’ve had a client ask you to “Make the logo bigger.”

You’ve had a client that insists on “filling up the space.”

You’ve learned to over-price web design projects because most clients are more picky about their websites than a high school girl picking out a prom dress.

You feel like you’re “On Call” half of the time because clients procrastinate so much.

You know keyboard shortcuts that require 4 fingers.

You’ve lost hours of work because an application crashed, and you had to start over from scratch because you were in the “zone” and forgot to save. Basically, you were having so much fun being creative that saving was the last thing on your mind at the time.

You’ve “Live-Traced” something.

You spend more hours per week looking at CSS showcase sites than you do at the gym.

The only thing that would make you happier than the demise of IE6 is world peace.

You’ve done everything but give up a body part to talk a client out of a “Flash Intro.” Yeah. I said it. Flash Intro. Sad, so so sad. (goes along with #2)

You have enough fonts on your hard drive to last you for: 1 font per day for about a decade, give or take a year or two.

You know, explicitly, what a “Flourish” is.

You worry about negative space as much as the content area.

You get phone calls from friends and family members on a regular, sometimes annoyingly-frequent basis, wanting your services for free or extremely cheap. (and the “portfolio” line makes you want to throw something across the room)

You’ve had a client that wants a website they can “update” on their own, but doesn’t know shit about websites.

You’re never more than 99% happy with your final product because you believe that EVERYTHING can be improved upon. (especially with those tight-deadline projects)

As posted on Bitbox

However, I believe he's happened to screw up the last four years of my finances.

I am back to using my old friend Ingo as my accountant because he's a great professional accountant and a good friend to boot.

After ingo looked at my books we discovered error upon error that has me using RRSP's to buy a house, thousands in un-deducted cost of business expenses and the list goes on.

I have paid thousands in taxes too much.
